First, what's an Animation Cel?
A production cel from SpongeBob Squarepants (1999), courtesy of icollector.com.
An animation "cel" (short for Celluoid) is a transparent sheet on which characters or objects are painted onto.
Back before they had computers to create cartoons, animators were forced to hand-paint every frame on these sheets,
then photograph them onto a hand-painted background. A process similar to stop motion.
Essentially, they're a lot like movie props!
My Animation Cel Collection:
Of course, animation cels are another thing I'm really interested in.
I've started collecting around 3 years ago by now. While not the most impressive, I'm really happy with it.
Still, most of what I collect are from the DiC Mario and Sonic cartoons.
You can check out my whole collection on my
rubberslug account:
Every single cel had actually been used in the production of these cartoons!
